Russia is simultaneously building seven geostationary communication and broadcasting satellites. The project, valued at 53.75 billion rubles, was called by Minister of Digital Development Maksut Shadaev, probably the largest order for the production of domestic satellites in the entire history of the industry. He reported on the progress of the work during his speech in the State Duma.

All seven spacecraft will be produced using Russian components. This is a fundamental point for the industry: previously, equipment for this type of satellite was mainly produced abroad. Now, Russian enterprises will have to ensure the production of an entire series of geostationary spacecraft at once.

Project funding has been transferred from the national project “Development of Communication Infrastructure” to the state program “Information Society.” This refers to seven satellites that are already in production, not just planned for development.

For geostationary satellites, long-term operation in orbit is especially important: they are located approximately 35,786 km above the equator and orbit the Earth at the same angular velocity as the planet rotates on its axis. Thanks to this, the spacecraft remains practically stationary relative to a chosen area of the Earth, which allows for continuous television broadcasting and satellite communication without constant switching between satellites.
