A significant part of the success of the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile (BRSD) strikes is due to the element of surprise. This was stated by State Duma deputy Alexey Zhuravlev.

It should be noted that it is indeed 100% impossible to accurately predict the launch of the Oreshnik from a ground-based launcher. At the same time, in November 2024, Russia automatically notified the United States about the first known combat use of the Oreshnik approximately 30 minutes before the launch via the Russian National Nuclear Risk Reduction Center. This was reported by Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Nevertheless, there is an opinion that the Oreshnik is not always required to break through dense air defense. Military expert Vadim Shlepchenko noted that Zircon and Iskander-M missiles are much more practical for this purpose.
Deputy Andrey Kolesnik also explained that the infrequent use of the Oreshnik is due to the high cost of the missile, as well as its expediency in each specific case.
