Retired air defense officer, former commander of the S-300 SAM division, Igor Garnov, proposed creating a new anti-aircraft missile system, the GS-12 "Vilyui". The system will not need to receive long-range air situation data from external sources, he told "Pervy Tekhnichesky".

According to him, its own radar should constantly monitor the space around the protected object. The main focus will be on reaction speed.

The multifunctional radar station is constantly on, the digital computing complex is continuously processing. The duty combat shift is at the consoles. Readiness for launch is 2 seconds. If a target enters our detection zone, we engage it.

According to him, "Vilyui" will have all-round surveillance and the ability to engage targets from any direction. At the same time, the system initially does not claim to control the entire airspace beyond its own range.

This approach corresponds to the concept of object air defense: the complex should not pursue air targets at long distances, but must reliably cover a specific object within its area of responsibility.

The "Vilyui" project is currently in the concept stage. Its authors propose creating a relatively compact system with a high degree of automation.
