Retired air defense officer and former S-300 SAM system division commander Igor Garnov proposed creating a new GS-12 "Vilyui" anti-aircraft missile system to protect individual critical facilities. The concept is designed to operate within a radius of about 10 km and should cover the airspace from small FPV drones to cruise missiles.

The main difference of the idea is the reliance on missiles, not interceptor drones. Garnov believes that the system should destroy high-speed targets on approach to the object.

And note – no interceptor drones. The GS-12 must be capable of destroying everything that moves in the air. From FPV to a cruise missile (1200 km/h). Interceptor drones can't even dream of such a thing.

According to the author's plan, "Vilyui" will have vertical launch, so the launcher will not need to turn towards the target. The complex should also automatically repel a massive attack from different directions and predict debris fall zones.

Garnov placed special emphasis on a large ammunition load and reducing the cost of a single anti-aircraft missile.

For complex high-speed targets, it is proposed to use several missile channels simultaneously, and for slow-moving drones – a single launch with an assessment of the result and a repeated attack if necessary.

Aviation engineer Valery Ageev noted that Russia has already built a multi-layered air defense system, in which complexes of various ranges cover different sections of airspace.
