Rostec's United Engine Corporation is developing a new intelligent next-generation gas turbine engine, the GTD-8SM. The promising 8 MW unit is being created based on the AL-31ST gas generator — a ground engine developed from the AL-31F aircraft engine.

The AL-31F itself became the basis for the power plants of an entire family of combat aircraft, including the Su-27, Su-30, and Su-34. Now, similar gas turbine technology is expected to operate as part of energy centers for data centers, enterprises, and distributed energy facilities.
Modern solutions will ensure high efficiency, which, according to preliminary calculations, will exceed 30%. The release of the first prototype is scheduled for 2028.
The GTD-8SM will receive a digital twin, which will allow monitoring the condition of a specific unit and detecting signs of wear in advance. The design will be modular: the compressor, combustion chamber, power turbine, and auxiliary drive will be made as separate blocks to speed up repairs.

According to ODK's calculations, the overhaul life will be 30 thousand hours, and the assigned life will be at least 120 thousand hours. The engine is designed to operate at temperatures from -60 to +40 °C.
The use of aviation units in energy is a long-standing practice for ODK. For example, GTD-6RM engines based on D-30KU/KP for heavy Il-76 transport aircraft have accumulated more than 5 million hours in industrial operation.
