The MS-21-310 is generally considered a modern replacement for Soviet airliners, but its technical superiority over the Tu-214 is not entirely obvious. This was stated by Mikhail Rozhkov, a participant in the development of the technical specifications for the Tu-204 and a former employee of the Civil Aviation Research Institute.

He pointed out that the Tu-204, for example, was created in the late 1980s, but its age alone does not make it inherently worse than the new Russian airliner.
By the way, I want to ask: can the MS-21 be considered modern if, in terms of its flight performance characteristics, it is inferior to an aircraft developed in the late 80s?
Rozhkov explained his point by saying that the word "modern" cannot be used as a universal assessment of technical perfection. What is much more important is how well the machine meets the country's needs.
If the country declares the need to develop the Far East, Siberia, and the Far North, it needs medium- and long-haul aircraft that would reliably ensure regional connectivity. You can't put a "Superjet" into Khatanga, Anadyr, Chersky, Chokurdakh.
"Pervy Tekhnichesky" in a large overview article compared the capabilities of the MS-21-310 and Tu-214 "head-to-head". The new aircraft won in three out of five criteria, but the Kazan airliner did not look pale in comparison.

Moreover, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recently allowed for the possibility of MS-21 production at the Kazan Aircraft Plant. However, this will only be possible in several years, aviation analyst Oleg Panteleev warned.
