Russian engineers have created a highly elastic coupling for diesel engines — the development has already passed tests as part of a diesel-generator set and is installed on the TEM14 locomotive for trial operation.

The new coupling is designed to protect the diesel and generator shafts from torsional vibrations that arise due to the pulsed operation of the cylinders. The development should reduce vibrational loads and accelerations transmitted to the power plant elements, increasing their service life and reliability.
The coupling was developed by specialists from the Urals Diesel Engine Plant in cooperation with the Ural Federal University and the Ural Rubber Products Plant.
Tests showed that the characteristics of the new part are within 10–15% of the parameters of the imported analogue used. After testing as part of the DGU, the coupling was installed on the TEM14 locomotive, where it will undergo trial operation.
The development is planned to be adapted for various operating conditions. The nomenclature is going to be expanded in terms of transmitted torque, dimensions, mechanical characteristics, and permissible temperatures.
The scope of application is not limited to railway equipment. Couplings can be used in diesel-generator sets, quarry machines, marine power plants, and oil production equipment.
