The production of nuclear fuel and equipment for nuclear energy could be localized in India, and cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi could expand beyond the Kudankulam NPP project. This was stated by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov at a meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission.

According to him, Rosatom's experience in building the Kudankulam NPP creates a basis for new joint projects in nuclear energy. Among the possible directions, Manturov named the construction of additional generation facilities, including small modular reactors, as well as the localization of equipment and nuclear fuel production in India.

The Kudankulam NPP is being built under a Russian-Indian intergovernmental agreement. The first and second power units of the plant were connected to India's national power grid in 2013 and 2016, respectively.

In total, the project envisages six power units. After completion of construction, the plant is expected to provide a significant share of the electricity needs of Tamil Nadu state, with a population of about 72 million people, and also supply electricity to other Indian states.
