The USA will participate in the deep modernization of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) of PS and PT modifications. The project aims to overcome the acute shortage of expensive anti-missiles for Patriot and create specialized “hybrid” ammunition, Army Recognition reports.
The first direction includes the modernization of existing Soviet 5V55 series missiles with the replacement of solid fuel and electronics.
The second is the integration of modern Western seeker heads into Soviet bodies for interfacing with old tracking stations.
Experts from the Delphi Global Research Center suggested that the first updated SAM systems will be on combat duty by the end of 2026. Production volumes will amount to several hundred missiles per year.
According to CSIS defense reports, modernized S-300s will take on subsonic targets at the front line, which will allow Patriot systems to be moved to the deep rear.
About the S-300 SAM system
The SAM system was developed within the walls of NPO "Almaz". From 1967 to 2005, more than 10 different modifications of the S-300 were produced in total.
Depending on the version, the target engagement range varies between 5–150 km. At the same time, the systems can strike targets moving at a speed of 1300–2800 m/s.
