Engineers from Kazan National Research Technical University named after A. N. Tupolev (KNITU KAI) have devised a radical solution to protect armored vehicles, including tanks, from the threat of drones. Moreover, it is designed for a moving column, not just a single combat vehicle.

When folded, the frames stand close to each other, with special composite hinges hidden between them. Energy accumulates inside the hinges when compressed: after release, they straighten independently and push the frames apart through hollow rods.

It takes no more than 30 seconds to deploy one section. The frames spread out to a distance equal to two widths of one frame, and a net is stretched between them. Its cells can be up to 100×100 mm in size, and damaged sections are proposed to be replaced without dismantling the entire structure.

The main task is to keep attacking UAVs at a distance from the equipment. The authors indicate that the stretched net can deflect falling ammunition, and woven camouflage tapes reduce the optical visibility of the column.

However, the design is not only for straight sections. Connecting rods of different lengths allow for the formation of a smooth curve of the canopy at turns – from 30° to 135°. After deployment, the wheels can be replaced with fixed supports and the structure can be secured in the ground.

In January 2026, UKBTM patented a frame structure with a mesh fabric and flexible rods that move the point of detonation of a cumulative munition beyond the armor – as an alternative to welded "mangals".
