Omsk engineers of the military academy named after General of the Army A. V. Khrulev has developed an unusual protection for main tanks, designed specifically for attacks from above and at an angle — from drops from UAVs to kamikaze drones. The solution has already been registered in the FIPS patent database.
The structure is placed directly on the roof of the turret without restrictions of rotation by 360°. A cup with a stand is welded in the center, on it — rotary rods. A strong elastic net is attached to the rods, and freely hanging chains with weights are attached around the perimeter. The system is deployed to a combat position in minutes and just as quickly folds into a marching position.
The mechanics of protection are simple: when the target approaches, the chains initiate the detonation of a cumulative munition at a distance, reducing the penetrating ability of the jet. If the munition falls from above, the net cushions the impact and throws it beyond the dimensions of the vehicle or triggers the detonator at a distance. When attacking a UAV, the net and weights damage the device and disrupt aiming
The developers of the Khrulev Academy focused on lightness and maintainability. The elements are replaced individually, the weight of the tank is almost not increased, visibility and crew exit are maintained. The solution can be combined with electronic warfare and smoke means, closing the vulnerable upper hemisphere without "cages" that interfere with maneuvering.
