A two-year course in automotive skills, including driving lessons and obtaining a license, should be introduced in Russian schools starting from the 9th grade. This proposal was put forward by Vladislav Grib, Deputy Secretary of the Civic Chamber (OP) of the Russian Federation.
Children can be taught automotive skills over two years, without rushing, under supervision. Then they can pass the relevant exam and get their license.
According to him, most schoolchildren want to learn how to drive a car and understand its mechanics. Therefore, automotive skills will become a popular area of training. In addition, many educational institutions have the necessary facilities for driving instruction, he concluded.
In Soviet schools, students were assigned to motor depots where they were taught by experienced instructors. Those who successfully completed the course and passed exams at the State Automobile Inspectorate (GAI) could obtain a driver's license. However, they were only allowed to drive a car after reaching 18 years of age.
Currently, in Russia, one can take exams for driving a passenger car (category B) and a truck (category C) from the age of 17. However, the age limit for obtaining a license and driving a vehicle is 18 years.
