The MC-21-310 passenger aircraft has received automated composite element production technology, which increases the accuracy of carbon fiber lay-up and reduces the manufacturing time of parts. The development was created by specialists from the Platov South-Russian State Polytechnic University (YURGPU (NPI)).
Novocherkassk engineers have developed a robotic complex for automatic laying of carbon fiber layers. The system ensures the precise placement of each composite layer, which is important for obtaining strong and lightweight aircraft structures.
In addition to the equipment, YURGPU specialists created software to control the entire production process. It controls the movement of the complex, the material feed rate, the fiber laying angle, and the sequence of operations.
The development is used in the manufacture of preforms from polymer composites. These blanks are used to create structural elements of the MC-21, including the skin, wing power elements, and center wing panels.
The use of automated technology makes it possible to increase the repeatability of part quality and reduce the dependence of production on complex manual operations. This is especially important for the MC-21, since a significant part of the aircraft's structure is made of modern composite materials.
