Ivan Akimov, a scientist from Tomsk State University, has developed a mathematical model of an optical device for studying the wave properties of electrons. The method will allow researchers to study the shape of the so-called wave packet and could form the basis of diagnostic systems for particle accelerators.

Instead of registering particles after a collision, the physicist proposed analyzing changes in a laser beam when interacting with an electron. To do this, the device will split the light into two streams: one will travel along a free path, the second - through an area with an electron.
After the beams are combined, the detector will record an alternation of light and dark bands. Based on the resulting pattern, researchers will be able to determine the characteristics of the wave packet without destroying the particle.
Akimov calculated the propagation of light using Maxwell's equations and derived formulas for energy distribution on the detector.
The proposed scheme also takes into account the interaction of light with plasmon-polaritons - hybrid excitations associated with photons and collective oscillations of electrons.
