The creation of a promising Russian interceptor based on the Su-57 will not allow for the full reproduction of the capabilities of a specialized aircraft of the MiG-31 class. This was stated to "Pervyy Tekhnicheskiy" by Nikolay Chikunov, a Category I design engineer at the A.I. Mikoyan Design Bureau.
According to him, the design of the existing fifth-generation fighter was not initially intended to meet the full set of requirements for a long-range high-altitude interceptor.
It is impossible to create an effective interceptor comparable in efficiency to the MiG-31. Neither the design, nor the engine capabilities, nor what can be packed into it in terms of combat load, including internal placement.
Chikunov added that the creation of a full-fledged successor to the MiG-31 will require the development of a specialized platform.
