The Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which Rosatom is building on the shores of the Yellow Sea in Jiangsu Province, China, will become the largest in the world after the commissioning of the seventh and eighth power units. This was stated by Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev.

Eight gigawatt-class units, 9 GW of clean electrical generation — the largest, most powerful station on the planet.

Likhachev reminded that six (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 7 and No. 8) of the eight planned units at the Tianwan NPP are of Russian production. The remaining ones are Chinese.

Rosatom is also constructing two power units (No. 3 and No. 4) with VVER-1200 reactors at the Xudapu NPP in Liaoning Province. The CEO of the state corporation noted that commissioning operations at the new power units of the two Chinese stations are expected within the coming weeks.

The development of the VVER-1200 reactor (Generation III+) began in 2005. It was based on a reactor plant with a thermal power of 3200 MW and an electrical power of 1200 MW. Its estimated service life is 60 years. The first power unit with a VVER-1200 began operation at the Novovoronezh NPP-2 in 2016. Rosatom then began exporting new technologies.
