During the creation of the Tu-160 strategic missile carrier, the Kazan Aircraft Plant had to take an unprecedented step. For the production of the largest combat aircraft in the USSR, the enterprise actually built a separate factory within the existing production, reported "Business Online" in an article dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the legendary KAZ director Vitaly Kopylov.
The main construction project was the famous 206th building. At the enterprise, it is still called "a factory within a factory".
Alexander Lavrentyev, President of the Association of Enterprises and Industrialists of Tatarstan, noted that Kopylov worked for the future.
They were not limited by the available technological capabilities – they looked ahead, at what was not available in the country at all.
Currently, the program for serial production of modernized Tu-160M missile carriers continues in Kazan. For its implementation, the plant is undergoing large-scale modernization of workshops and new equipment is being installed.
It also became known that Kopylov asked to transfer the capacities of the Kazan Helicopter Plant to the enterprise. This request was ultimately not satisfied.
