At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the "Rosel" holding (part of Rostec) and the government of St. Petersburg signed an agreement to establish a full-cycle scientific and production zone based on TsNII "Elektron". This is the first such site in the city.
The cluster will include an engineering center, a prototyping center, testing laboratories, and production facilities.
Photonics has already replaced classical optics in most applied fields, Rosel stated. Fiber-optic communication, laser material processing, medical diagnostics – all these are photonic technologies. The global photonics market is estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars.
Microelectronics is the foundation of technological sovereignty, the holding emphasizes. Domestic microcontrollers, chips for communication and control are used in industry, energy, transport, and space. Creating its own production base reduces dependence on imports and forms the basis for related industries – from mechanical engineering to medical instrument manufacturing.
The cluster in St. Petersburg is designed to connect scientific schools with industrial production. When development and production are concentrated on one site, the cycle "idea – prototype – series" becomes shorter, and technological risks are lower. Rosel emphasizes: the creation of such a cluster is an important step towards Russia's technological independence in the field of high-tech electronics and photonics.
