MS-21 Wing Issue Solved in a New Way

Yakovlev engineers developed new calculation models for polymer-composite materials

PAO "Yakovlev" revealed details of the development of composite structures for the MS-21 airliner. When creating the aircraft, engineers actually had to re-establish the Russian school of calculation and design of power elements made of composites.

The company noted that the strength department is responsible for the structural life, load calculation, and safety of the aircraft throughout its entire service life. Special attention was paid to the composite wing – one of the most complex elements of the MS-21.

For the project, engineers developed new calculation models for polymer-composite materials, taking into account the influence of temperature, humidity, vibrations, aggressive environments, and possible structural damage.

In fact, the strength department created a new engineering school for designing power units from composites.

Aviation blogger SkyExpert refuted the view that the 6-ton overweight of the MS-21-310 was allegedly due to new composite wings.

It is already known that the first batch of MS-21-310 will be received by the Aeroflot group. The discussion was about 200 aircraft until 2030.
