Russia has commenced exercises for the preparation and use of nuclear forces in the face of an aggression threat. The drills are taking place from May 19 to 21, as announced by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
Over 64,000 military personnel and more than 7,800 units of weapons and special equipment have been involved in the exercises. The operation includes over 200 missile launchers, more than 140 aircraft and helicopters, 73 surface ships, and 13 submarines, including eight strategic missile carriers.
The drills involve the Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern and Pacific Fleets, the Long-Range Aviation Command, as well as some forces from the Leningrad and Central Military Districts.
During the practical phase, the military will practice bringing nuclear forces units to readiness and conduct launches of ballistic and cruise missiles at training grounds within Russia.
Joint training for the preparation and use of nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus is also planned.
The Ministry of Defence stated that the main goal of the exercises is to test the readiness of troops, improve unit command and control, and practice actions to deter a potential adversary.
