Officers of the Korean People's Army (KPA) who marched in the Victory Parade across Red Square were armed with ceremonial weapons – the "Type 88-2". Such rifles are given to veterans and servicemen distinguished in battle.
The chrome-plated version of the "Type 88-2" is a variant of the AK-74 with a top-folding steel stock. The rifle is personally presented by the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un. This award is valued higher than orders and medals. Inscriptions about the serviceman's merits are also placed on the weapon.
The "Type 88-2" assault rifle is a modification of the "Type 88" (a clone of the Kalashnikov assault rifle). The assault rifle has a high-capacity helical magazine (up to 150 rounds of 5.45×39 mm caliber). It is used to equip special forces units.
