The Leningrad Optical-Mechanical Association named after Lenin (AO "LOMO", part of the Kalashnikov Concern) transferred the GDB-VO-G-23 fiber gastrofibroscope to the Lysychansk Central City Hospital. The equipment is used for diagnosing organs of the upper digestive tract. This was reported by the concern's press service.
The device allows for examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, as well as biopsy sampling under visual control for subsequent cytological and histological studies.
Biopsy is an invasive diagnostic method in which a doctor obtains a tissue or cell sample from a patient's body. Then, microscopic examination of the biomaterial can determine the nature of the pathology. For example, in oncology, it can detect a malignant tumor.
When penetrating the organs of the digestive system, the GDB-VO-G-23 gastrofibroscope transmits an image via special optical fibers (glass fibers less than 20 µm thick) to the eyepiece. With its help, the doctor can detect inflammation, erosion, or stomach ulcers. The GDB-VO-G-23 device is also used in endoscopic surgeries.
