"Superjet" broke free from dependence on USSR aviation industry by abandoning jigs

Designer Mikhail Pogosyan: "We managed to eliminate fitting operations and reduce labor intensity by half"

The short-haul airliner "Sukhoi Superjet" became a breakthrough for domestic aircraft manufacturing and differed from civil aircraft of the late USSR with a new approach to production. This was stated by SSJ-100 designer Mikhail Pogosyan.

According to him, Sukhoi Design Bureau immediately decided to create an aircraft for international certification with the participation of both foreign and domestic suppliers in cooperation. A significant innovation was digital production.

The transition to jigless assembly required the purchase of high-precision equipment. We were able to eliminate fitting operations and reduce manufacturing labor intensity by approximately half compared to traditional technologies.

Pogosyan added that Sukhoi Design Bureau also formed a modern project management system. It covered the full range of business processes necessary for the aircraft's success.

Honored Pilot of the USSR, member of the Public Council of Rostransnadzor Oleg Smirnov, in an interview with "Pervy Tekhnichesky", told how former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi influenced the fate of the Sukhoi Superjet 100.
