Russian engineers create cartridge for shooting down drones

The Research Institute of Applied Chemistry's development uses heavy shot and a special wad-container

A new shotgun cartridge for combating drones has been developed in Russia, capable of effectively hitting drones at a distance of up to 100 meters. The project was authored by specialists from the Research Institute of Applied Chemistry.

According to patent materials, the cartridge received an increased proportion of heavy shot – it accounts for up to 80% of the ammunition's mass. This solution allows individual pellets to retain high energy at long distances and damage UAV structural elements at a range of 70 to 100 meters.

The developers also changed the parameters of the wad-container. The selected ratio of diameter and length helps the shot spread at an optimal distance for hitting aerial targets.

The institute noted that existing analogues did not always ensure effective drone engagement at distances exceeding 80 meters, especially when using connected shot.
