Wind tunnel tests have been conducted to reduce air resistance for Russian speed skaters. The experiments were carried out by specialists from the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI), who measured the loads on the athletes' bodies and tested equipment options at speeds up to 55 kilometers per hour.
Before starting the work, the engineers agreed on a test program and manufactured a special stand. The design turned out to be universal and suitable for future research in related fields.
During the experiments, a mannequin in various poses was sequentially placed in the air flow. Researchers recorded the separation points of the jets and the transition of the laminar boundary layer to turbulent. In parallel, the streamlining of a single skate was checked. Flow visualization helped to accurately determine areas of increased resistance.
Based on the data obtained, specific recommendations were formed. Athletes were shown the optimal body position on the ice, and coaches were given suggestions for adjusting the cut and materials of sportswear.
