33 million battery cells per year: a mega-cluster for battery production is being deployed in Moscow

Full localization of production will significantly reduce the price of domestic electric vehicles and other electric transport

Russia is betting on energy storage systems. A unique production cluster will appear in Moscow by the end of 2026, which will combine scientific developments and industrial power. According to First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, the project will become the basis for a number of new industries.

The main "feature" is a full production cycle. At two gigafactories in Moscow, in a joint project with Rosatom, the battery cells themselves, the "heart" of any battery, will be manufactured. The planned output is 33 million cells per year, and in five years the total capacity of Russian energy storage systems will exceed 12 GWh.

The volume of investments in the project exceeds 105 billion rubles. Today, the traction battery accounts for 35% of the cost of an electric vehicle, and local production will significantly reduce the price. This means that Moskvich electric vehicles and GAZ and KamAZ electric buses will become more affordable, and the electric transport market in Russia will receive a powerful impetus.

The application of developments will be large-scale: from electric vehicles and river transport to uninterruptible power supply systems for cities and autonomous power supply for the Arctic and the Far East. In fact, a new ecosystem is being created that will boost the chemical industry, the production of high-tech materials and microelectronics. The first products with a capacity of about one megawatt are planned to be received this year.
