New Vortex Devices Will Accelerate and Reduce the Cost of Oil Refining

Reshetnev University has invented a technology for efficient separation of oil into fractions

Students and graduate students of the Siberian State University of Science and Technology named after Academician M. F. Reshetnev in Krasnoyarsk have developed vortex contact devices for rectification columns of oil refining. The team has already manufactured and tested prototypes. The technology increases the efficiency of separating oil into fractions and reduces the costs of enterprises.

Engineers have optimized the geometry of the channels and expanded the range of stable operation of the equipment. For detailed analysis, three types of models were selected — with straight, tangential, and ring channels. All prototypes were printed on a 3D printer, which accelerated the testing cycle and reduced costs.

The model with double-sided channels and ring swirlers showed the best results. The design reduces stagnant zones, reduces metal consumption, and increases the interfacial surface.

We designed and tested a model with double-sided channels and ring swirlers. It turned out that in certain modes it shows maximum efficiency compared to other samples.

The team has prepared a project of a contact stage for an industrial column under the loads of an oil refinery. Next, the developers will continue testing and draw up documentation for implementation in production.
