Telecom operator MTS recorded and neutralized more than 95.3 million attempts of fraudulent calls targeting subscribers on the eve and on International Women's Day. All incidents were suppressed at the identification stage thanks to the automated service "Defender", which uses machine learning algorithms to analyze patterns of suspicious activity.
According to MTS telecom analytics, the target audience of attackers was most often women aged 35 to 44, who are not married. The geographical distribution of attacks showed a concentration in large agglomerations: Moscow accounted for 19% of the total number of calls, St. Petersburg - 6%, Krasnodar - 5%.
A study of timestamps showed that the most likely times for cyberattacks are at the beginning and end of the work week.
The "Defender" service uses multi-level filtering: number reputation analysis, behavioral biometrics, blacklisting, and heuristic rules. Thanks to this, 100% of the recorded attacks were blocked before connecting to the subscriber, which minimized the risks of financial damage and personal data leakage.
