The new Russian GTD-110M gas turbine engine has impressive characteristics: despite its substantial dimensions (length — 7.19 m, width — 3.76 m, height — 4.34 m), it weighs only 60 tons. The secret behind this combination of low weight and large size lies in the use of lightweight materials, the manufacturing company explained — the Rybinsk enterprise "ODK-Saturn".
Counterparts with similar characteristics, including foreign ones, mostly weigh from 200 tons and above, which makes the GTD-110M stand out favorably from its competitors.
This engine has enormous dimensions, but lightweight parts are used in it. This makes it possible to manufacture the power unit at an aircraft engine plant using simple and lightweight equipment. No special devices are needed to lift it.
Also, compared with foreign counterparts, the GTD-110M stands out for high fuel efficiency — its efficiency exceeds 36%, which places the unit among the best gas turbine engines in the world.
The GTD-110M is the first Russian high-capacity gas turbine in the class above 110 MW. In the lineup of the United Engine Corporation, this unit is considered a unique development.
