Kazakhstan chose Russian technologies for the construction of its first nuclear power plant due to Rosatom's high expertise, and there is no political opportunism in this decision. This opinion was expressed by Anatoly Kirichenko, Deputy Director of the Moscow Center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

The choice of site, the choice of project, the choice of many components — these are professional actions. This is not an improvisation. Not opportunism, it is not solely a political decision.

Rosatom has already tested its technologies at existing power plants, and they have shown good results, Kirichenko emphasized. As an example, he named the Novovoronezh NPP (with VVER-400, VVER-1000, VVER-1200 reactors) and the Leningrad NPP (with VVER-1200 and RBMK-1000 reactors). According to the expert, the new equipment installed at these sites is "safe and reliable".

For the development of nuclear energy in Kazakhstan, not one, but several stations need to be built. "If there are too few, there are no prospects," Kirichenko explained. This is especially important, as nuclear energy can ensure the growth of an entire sector of the economy, the expert concluded.

Kazakhstan has chosen Rosatom as the leader of an international consortium for the construction of the Balkhash NPP in the Almaty region. According to the nuclear industry development strategy, at least 3 nuclear power plants will be built in the republic by 2050.
