Russian researchers Artyom Babenko, Evgeny Burnaev, Sergey Nikolenko, and Lyudmila Prokhorenkova have been included in the top scientists in the field of artificial intelligence and image processing based on scientific citation metrics for 2025. This follows from the updated database on the Elsevier platform. All four are associated with Yandex's research or its educational programs.

Artyom Babenko heads the Yandex Research laboratory and the company's research and training laboratory at the Faculty of Computer Science of HSE University. Lyudmila Prokhorenkova is a leading researcher at Yandex Research and a lecturer at the School of Data Analysis. Evgeny Burnaev heads the Artificial Intelligence Center at Skoltech and teaches at the School of Data Analysis. Sergey Nikolenko is the scientific director of the SPbSU and Yandex partnership program "Data Science".

Georgy Aizel, a meteorologist at Yandex Weather, also made it to the annual list. He is involved in applying machine learning to precipitation forecasting and the consequences of climate change.

How the top AI researchers are ranked

The ranking takes into account citations, the h-index, the number of co-authors, and the researcher's position in the list of authors of a work. The database covers 20 scientific fields and 174 specialties, with the update published on October 7.

Yandex also awards the Yandex ML Prize. In September, eight lecturers and heads of educational programs from HSE, MIPT, MSU, ITMO, and NSU became laureates for 2026, and two more scientists were included in the "Hall of Fame" nomination.
