KMZ will supply emergency diesel generators for the Project Leader nuclear icebreaker Rossiya

The equipment will provide power to reactor safety systems for up to 30 days

The Kingisepp Machine-Building Plant (KMZ) will fulfill in August 2026 a contract worth more than 160 million rubles for the supply of emergency diesel generators for the lead Project Leader nuclear icebreaker Rossiya. This was reported to RIA Novosti by KMZ Managing Director Mikhail Danilenko. The first unit has already been manufactured.

Emergency diesel generators provide power supply to the safety systems of reactor units in the event of failure of the main and backup power sources. According to Danilenko, in a critical situation they are capable of supporting reactor operation for up to 30 days, compared with the design standard of three days.

The icebreaker Rossiya is being built at the Zvezda shipyard in the Russian Far East, with delivery scheduled for 2030. The 120 MW vessel is designed for year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route in ice up to 4.3 meters thick. The increased hull width will make it possible to escort large-tonnage vessels. The power plant is based on two RITM-400 reactors, almost twice as powerful as the RITM-200 reactors used on the universal Project 22220 icebreakers.
