The shipbuilding enterprise Sevmash is completing preparatory work for the launch of the newest nuclear submarine Ulyanovsk, the fourth vessel of Project 885M Yasen-M. The press service of the government of the Ulyanovsk Region showed a live mock-up of the submarine cruiser for the first time.
Regional head Alexey Russkikh noted that Ulyanovsk will soon honorably carry out the tasks assigned to protect maritime borders. He held a meeting with Captain First Rank Vyacheslav Samoylov.
The work has already begun; together with the personnel, the commander visited our educational institutions and told the students about the national navy and the future submarine cruiser that bears the name of our city.
The publication Tekhnosfera Rossii drew attention to the fact that Ulyanovsk will not become a carrier of the newest Poseidon torpedoes. The submarine's name was first announced in 2017 — this is how the seventh nuclear-powered submarine of Project 885M under construction at Sevmash was designated. At that time, it was a multipurpose submarine of the Yasen-M family with delivery planned for the middle of the decade.
However, in 2021 the media reported that Ulyanovsk would become the third carrier of strategic unmanned Poseidon vehicles within the framework of the secret Project 09853. It was from that moment that the confusion arose: one name — two different projects.
However, the project with the "Poseidons" did not disappear because of this, and it is obvious that the second and third boats under it are being built under heightened secrecy.
