During the modernization, the developers expanded the weapon's compatibility with various types of 9×19 mm ammunition. The primary round is now the high-impulse 7N21 armor-piercing cartridge; however, the PPK-20 retains the ability to use most standard domestic and foreign rounds of this caliber.

The weapon combines the proven reliability of AK-series assault rifles with compactness and modern ergonomics. Among the key features are a right-folding stock with length adjustment and an ambidextrous fire mode selector, which increases ease of use for both right-handed and left-handed shooters.

Alan Lushnikov, CEO of AO "Kontsern Kalashnikov", stated that the PPK-20 is today one of the best examples in its class and is capable of remaining relevant for the next twenty years. According to him, the concern is making every effort to provide customers with high-quality weapons that have already confirmed their effectiveness in the special military operation zone.
