Rosatom's management has begun negotiations with the authorities of Niger on the construction of the first nuclear power plant (NPP). This was reported in the press service of the state corporation.
Discussions are at an early stage.
The corporation emphasized that they are ready to offer the African country modern, reliable and safe technologies. This is especially important given the chronic energy shortage and the lack of necessary infrastructure in Niger.
According to the World Bank, only 20% of the population has access to electricity. Most of Niger's electricity generation is provided by thermal power plants using petroleum products, with the remaining volume being imported from neighboring Nigeria.
In July 2025, Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy of Niger signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of peaceful atom. At the same time, the country's authorities expressed interest in the construction of a nuclear power plant.
