Belarus has completed the planned maintenance of the second power unit of the Belarusian NPP, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic reported. The power unit was reconnected to the grid after replacing part of the spent nuclear fuel with fresh fuel.
The department noted that annual planned maintenance is carried out at nuclear power plants according to international practice to maintain the stable condition of equipment. The Belarusian NPP is located near the city of Ostrovets, Grodno region, and was built according to the Russian VVER-1200 project. The station consists of two power units with a capacity of 1.2 GW each, and the general contractor for the construction was the ASE group of Rosatom.
The project was financed with the help of a Russian state loan in the amount of $10 billion. The first power unit was connected to the grid in November 2020 and put into commercial operation in June 2021. The second power unit was connected to the grid in May 2023, and commercial operation began on November 1 of the same year.
Earlier in November 2025, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich announced that during a meeting with President Alexander Lukashenko, a decision was made to build a third power unit of the Belarusian NPP. According to the plans of the Ministry of Energy, the new unit may be included in the country's energy system in 2035-2038.
