Rosatom Confirms Readiness to Support New Stage of Project

Belarusian authorities have officially decided to build the third power unit of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP). This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic, Viktor Karankevich.

According to him, in parallel with the start of work on the new unit, a study of possible sites for the development of nuclear energy in the Mogilev region will be organized. Surveys will be conducted in areas where there may be a need for additional capacity in the future due to the growth of electricity consumption.

The decision on the second stage of the BelNPP has been made — we are starting to deal with this now.
Viktor Karankevich, Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus

Karankevich clarified that the study of the site in the Mogilev region and the preparation for the construction of the third power unit will take place simultaneously.

Regarding the prospects for the emergence of another nuclear power plant in the country, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that such plans will directly depend on the dynamics of electricity consumption growth.

BelNPP is the first nuclear power plant in Belarus, built near Ostrovets in the Grodno region according to the Russian project "AES-2006". The general contractor was Atomstroyexport (part of Rosatom). The first power unit was connected to the power system on November 3, 2020, and put into operation in June 2021. The second power unit was connected in May 2023, and commercial operation began on November 1 of the same year.
