A comprehensive overhaul and modernization of the auxiliary steam boilers has been completed on the diesel-electric icebreaker "Kapitan Belousov," a veteran of the domestic icebreaker fleet that turned 70 last year. The work was carried out with the technical support of specialists from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS).
Despite its venerable age, the vessel continues to serve in the waters of the Sea of Azov, providing escort for ships in the winter. It remains in service thanks to regular maintenance and timely modernization of key systems.
During the repair, specialists had to solve a number of non-standard engineering problems associated with the outdated design of the equipment and the limited availability of original components. In addition, RS experts approved all used products and components in accordance with current regulatory requirements.
In the near future, after the completion of all repair work and the final inspection of the hull and mechanisms, the icebreaker "Kapitan Belousov" will be issued a full set of classification documents. This will allow the vessel to continue serving under the flag of the Russian Federation and perform its tasks in the Azov Sea basin in the upcoming navigation season.
"Kapitan Belousov" is a Baltic-type diesel-electric icebreaker built in 1953 at the Helsinki shipyard "Wärtsilä" (Värtsilä) by order of the USSR.
