Russian Geranium kamikaze jet drones have received an autonomous guidance and target selection module, as well as a ground object recognition system. Now drones can take a full place between cruise and aviation missiles, analysts at the Telegram channel "Military Chronicle" said.
It is not yet known exactly what communication system is used on the Geraniums. Preliminary, a camera capable of operating in the visible or infrared range is used as the main sensor.
The drone receives a video stream from the camera, and the onboard neural network analyzes each incoming frame. When it identifies a target that matches a given pattern, it accurately determines its center and transmits the data to the operator for trajectory correction and confirmation of the attack.
Analysts added that infrared cameras are especially effective at night or in bad weather conditions.
Alexander Stepanov, an employee of the Institute of Law and National Security of the RANEPA, noted that Geraniums are capable of carrying R-74M2 air-to-air missiles for the Su-57 fighter. If this becomes possible, then Geraniums will become a full-fledged threat not only to ground targets, but also to aircraft.
