Number of fake accidents to receive CASCO payments increased in Russia

Insurance fraud has become more common than before

There has been a sharp increase in Russia in cases of fraud with CASCO payments using staged accidents. Over the past year, the number of such incidents has doubled, and the average amount of illegally requested compensation exceeds 5 million rubles, Mikhail Spivak, Head of the Insurance Fraud Prevention Department at T-Insurance, told reporters.

We have about 100 similar cases in the active phase of processing, for example, in Smolensk we see a noticeable increase in staged accidents. Regulators and the police need to work together to combat this kind of organized criminal groups of insurance fraudsters.

The fraudsters' scheme is that they purchase used cars of well-known German brands abroad, carry out cosmetic repairs and insure them under CASCO at an inflated cost, 1.5-2.5 times higher than the real one. Then they stage a fake accident with a stationary object and demand payment of the full insurance amount.

Most of these cases were recorded in 2025 in Moscow and the Moscow region (28%). The top five regions with the largest number of fraudulent claims also include St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region (8%), as well as Tatarstan, Samara and Voronezh regions (5% each).
