The universal nuclear icebreaker "Chukotka" of Project 22220 is scheduled to be delivered to the customer in December 2026, according to Andrey Puchkov, General Director of JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation."
The readiness of the "Chukotka" nuclear icebreaker is approximately 70%. The icebreakers of Project 22220 have a power of 60 MW, making them the largest and most powerful in the world. The tasks of the nuclear vessels include ensuring year-round navigation in the western Arctic region.
Rosatom's CEO Alexey Likhachev also announced that a record eight nuclear icebreakers will serve the Northern Sea Route for the first time in Russia's history, starting in early December 2026.
Currently, five icebreakers are already in the water area, and the nuclear icebreaker "Stalingrad" of Project 22220 was laid down at the Baltic Shipyard on November 18.
The length of the Project 22220 icebreakers is 173.3 m, the width is 34 m, the icebreaking capacity is up to 3 m, and the displacement is 33,540 tons. The service life of the nuclear vessels is 40 years.
