The heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov" of Project 1144 is undergoing the second stage of sea trials in the White Sea. The ship underwent repair and modernization at the Sevmash enterprise of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) in Severodvinsk.
The cruiser was laid down under the name "Kalinin" on May 17, 1983, at the Baltic Shipyard named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze. The ship was launched on April 25, 1986, and accepted into the Northern Fleet on December 30, 1988. It received its modern name, in honor of Admiral Pavel Nakhimov, on April 22, 1992.
In June 2013, Sevmash signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for a complete renovation of the ship. As a result of the modernization, "Admiral Nakhimov" received 80 cells of the UKSK (universal shipborne firing complex) for Kalibr and Onyx cruise missiles, as well as hypersonic Zircon missiles. The ship also has 96 silos for naval versions of the S-300FM/S-400 SAM and the Paket-NK anti-submarine torpedo complex.
