The law will come into force on March 1, 2027

In Russia, a law will come into force on March 1, 2027, according to which driver's licenses will be annulled if a citizen is found to have a dangerous disease. This includes mental disorders, said State Duma deputy Sergei Kolunov.

Data on the health status of drivers will be uploaded to the unified register of the Ministry of Health of Russia (EHIS). Employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia will also have access to it, the parliamentarian explained.

If a citizen is found to have a contraindication to driving a vehicle (TC), he will be required to undergo an unscheduled medical examination within 3 months.

In case of failure to appear, the driver's license will be canceled automatically, the person will be informed about this.

Kolunov recalled that now Russians must undergo a medical examination after the expiration of their driver's license (once every 10 years). However, there are cases when drivers with contraindications continue to drive, creating a threat to other road users. The corresponding legislative norm will eliminate this problem, he summarized.

What diseases will become a contraindication to driving a vehicle

The list of medical contraindications and restrictions for driving vehicles is established by the government of the Russian Federation. These include:

  • general disorders of psychological development
  • epilepsy
  • schizophrenia
  • schizotypal personality disorders
  • blindness
  • anomaly of color vision

Before the amendments come into force, a Russian citizen can continue to drive a car even if he has medical contraindications.
