"Stalingrad" moved from drawings: assembly of new nuclear icebreaker parts has begun

At the Sevmash enterprise of the USC, welding of the hull of the key unit of the 22220 project vessel has begun

Sevmash (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, USC) has begun assembling and welding the hull of the first thrust bearing for the sixth nuclear icebreaker "Stalingrad". The vessel of project 22220 is being built at the Baltic Shipyard.

For the set of products intended for the icebreaker "Stalingrad", metal cutting was performed, a blank was formed, and preliminary machining was carried out.

The plant also continues to manufacture thrust bearings for the nuclear icebreaker "Leningrad". The products are in the final stage, the USC noted.

The hull of the first one was transferred to assembly at the end of last week after machining, the second and third hulls are undergoing machining. The work is on schedule.

The new nuclear icebreaker of project 22220 was named "Stalingrad" in honor of the heroic defense of the city of Stalingrad during the Great Patriotic War. The vessel is scheduled to be launched in 2028.

Main characteristics of the 22220 project icebreaker:

  • Overall length – 173.3 m;
  • Width – 34 m;
  • Draft – 10.5 m / 9.03 m;
  • Power – 60 MW (on shafts);
  • Displacement – 33.5 thousand tons;
  • Icebreaking capacity – up to 3 m.
