New Earth remote sensing satellite constellation will enhance strategic and commercial capabilities

The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Bakanov, and the founder of AFK Sistema, Vladimir Yevtushenkov, signed a cooperation agreement aimed at creating an effective orbital constellation of spacecraft for Earth remote sensing (ERS).

The document stipulates that AFK Sistema's subsidiary, Sputniks Group, will be responsible for forming the ERS satellite constellation, which will be launched into orbit with the help of Roscosmos. Earth remote sensing is a technology for observing the Earth's surface using satellites, allowing data to be obtained on weather, vegetation cover, urban development, agriculture, and other industries.

In the first stage, the parties will jointly determine the technical characteristics and appearance of the spacecraft. It is planned that the new constellation will improve the efficiency of Russian programs for the exploration and use of space. In addition, the project will create conditions for the development of private astronautics in the country, expanding the capabilities of commercial companies in the space sector.

We plan to implement a public-private partnership mechanism for space infrastructure facilities in practice. We will create devices and supply data to the federal ERS fund for further provision to consumers
Dmitry Bakanov, head of Roscosmos

The project combines the resources of the state and private capital, accelerates the development of remote sensing technologies, and opens up new opportunities for the commercial use of space. The agreement between Roscosmos and AFK Sistema creates a platform for the formation of a modern Russian ERS satellite constellation capable of meeting strategic and commercial needs for data about the Earth.
