Твэлы с жидкометаллическим подслоем ОС-5: Росатом представил прорывную технологию

The state corporation's development will allow for more efficient use of nuclear energy

Rosatom specialists have developed a unique nuclear fuel for fast reactors, the state corporation's press service reported.

The new OS-5 fuel assembly is based on nitride uranium-plutonium fuel. It includes an innovative liquid metal sublayer. It consists of metallic sodium, placed under a steel shell and "envelops" the fuel pellets made of uranium-plutonium composition.

Research and calculations carried out by Russian scientists show that the use of a liquid metal sublayer will significantly improve the characteristics of fuel elements (fuel rods) with nitride fuel for IV generation reactors operating on fast neutrons. The temperature of such fuel will be lower, which will preserve the coolant parameters.

The uranium-plutonium pellet will swell less and exert less pressure on the fuel rod cladding, which will reduce the risk of possible depressurization. These improvements will not only increase the operational reliability of the fuel, but also its economic efficiency.

Fuel elements with liquid metal sublayer OS-5 are a revolutionary technological solution and another important step in the development of nitride fuel for "fast" reactors.
