Rosatom has launched the world's first plant for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel without liquid waste in Zheleznogorsk (Krasnoyarsk Territory).
In the second stage of the Pilot Demonstration Center at the Mining and Chemical Combine, an industrial complex has been commissioned that allows processing up to 200 tons of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) per year. The plant operates without the formation of liquid radioactive waste — this is a unique technology that reduces the environmental burden and minimizes the risk to humans.
There are a total of 350-370 thousand tons of spent nuclear fuel on the planet, which is very dangerous for humans... We have a consensus that the future of nuclear energy needs to be brought closer
The project is a key step towards 4th generation energy technologies — a future where nuclear energy will run on reprocessed fuel, significantly reducing the need for uranium mining. This paves the way for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable development of nuclear energy for decades to come.
