A G2-level magnetic storm occurred on Earth. It was recorded on the night of September 10, according to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI and ISZF.
The main causes of magnetic storms are usually related to solar phenomena (plasma clouds or solar wind flows). However, graphs showing solar wind activity did not record any significant changes. Scientists were unable to explain the occurrence of the geostorm.
Apparently, the only explanation for what happened that seems even remotely scientific is the formation of a so-called unusually large substorm—a phenomenon in which the energy of the magnetosphere is released without obvious external causes due to internal processes. This usually refers to a spontaneous disturbance of equilibrium in the tail of the Earth's magnetosphere (an extended structure that stretches for more than 100,000 kilometers in the anti-solar direction).
This is the first such major event this year. The geomagnetic situation has already stabilized.
