Today, the ceremony of raising the St. Andrew's flag on the icebreaking patrol ship \"Ivan Papanin\" took place in Severomorsk. The event was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Alexander Moiseev, the Commander of the Northern Fleet Konstantin Kabantsov and the Governor of the Murmansk Region Andrei Chibis.
The ship, named after the outstanding Arctic explorer, was laid down in April 2017 at the Admiralty Shipyards (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, USC) in St. Petersburg. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation signed a contract with the shipbuilders for the construction of two such ships.
Project 23550 (code \"Arktika\"), according to which the \"combat icebreaker\" was built, was developed by the Central Marine Design Bureau \"Almaz\" (CMDB \"Almaz\", part of USC). According to the project description, the ship will combine the properties of an icebreaker, a tug and a patrol ship.
The ship \"Ivan Papanin\" is capable of overcoming ice up to 1.7 meters thick, of which 1 meter can be passed continuously. Its displacement is about 9 thousand tons, length - 114 meters, width - 20 meters, and maximum speed - 18 knots, which is equivalent to 33 kilometers per hour. The main crew of the ship numbers 49 people, and the additional crew - 47. \"Ivan Papanin\" can autonomously perform tasks for about 70 days, thanks to the reserves of water and provisions. The cruising range of the ship reaches 10 thousand nautical miles, which is more than 18 thousand kilometers.
