Fraudsters in Russia are actively using a new trick to induce citizens to initiate calls to fake numbers themselves, which allows them to bypass the protection systems of banks and telecom operators. The scheme is based on creating the illusion of a threat, followed by an offer to "solve the problem" through a call to a fraudulent call center.
Attackers send out messages warning of an alleged "hacking of Gosuslugi", "data leak" or "unauthorized access" to personal accounts. These messages include a phone number that is offered to call urgently to fix the problem. In fact, the call is directed to a call center of fraudsters, where the victim is persuaded to disclose personal data or transfer money. Such schemes are recorded throughout the country.
To recognize a fake, experts recommend paying attention to three signs: a suspicious sender (messages come from personal numbers, email addresses or accounts in messengers), a call for immediate action, and the presence of stylistic errors or an informal tone. Official government services never ask citizens to call back on unknown numbers.
To protect against fraudsters, experts advise ignoring suspicious messages and checking information through official channels of banks or government portals. If in doubt, it is recommended to contact law enforcement agencies.
